Volleyball is a fall sport at Westborough High School, stretching from tryouts in August to the state tournament in November. To be a great volleyball player though, it certainly helps to play year-round. This page lists some of the other resources available for middle school and high school athletes to improve their skills and continue playing the game once the season's over.
Clubs
Commonly called "Club Volleyball", Junior Olympic
volleyball is governed by USA Volleyball and was founded in 1980. There are
currently 35 clubs in New England including 17 in Massachusetts. Clubs welcome
athletes under 18 years of age and have teams down to the '12 and Under' division.
Girls within the Rangers program have played for CMass
Juniors, SMASH, and Metrowest
Juniors. Tryouts are in November or December for most teams and the season
consists of practicing and playing tournaments on Sundays through the end
of April.
In New England, Club volleyball is managed by NERVA, the New England Region Volleyball Association. A listing of all the Massachusetts Juniors Clubs may be found on their website.
Camps
Summer volleyball camps are common and a number of the top
college coaches in the area run week-long camps during the summer. A good
list of New England
summer volleyball camps may be found on the NERVA website. Some camps
are geared towards specific positions such as setting and hitting, some
are more general. Specific camps our players have attended in the past include Boston College, Mass Pike, Bridgewater State, UNH, Nike Volleyball Camps, Bentley College, SMASH Volleyball, and even the Rick Butler Setting Academy. Another great resource is to get in touch with either Coach Anderson or our varsity captains to see where the players are planning on going this year.
Clinics
A number of clinics are run year-round by local players and coaches. Clinics
teach players not only how to play better, but also teach how to coach and
referee the game of volleyball. Keep an eye on NERVA,
Yankee Volleyball, and other Massachusetts volleyball organizations
to catch clinics as they are announced.
